Western Honey Bee
The Western Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) is an introduced species in New Zealand and was first brought here in the 1800s. It is now widespread throughout the country and is one of the most familiar and economically important insects in New Zealand.
Honey bees are social insects that live in colonies with a queen, workers, and drones. In New Zealand they play a major role in pollinating crops and producing honey, wax, propolis, and other hive products, making them important in both agriculture and horticulture.
