Stanwellia sp.
FamilyPycnothelidae GenusStanwellia NZ statusEndemic
Stanwellia is a genus of open holed mygalomorph spiders currently placed in the family Pycnothelidae. New Zealand has several endemic species, although the genus also occurs in Australia. These spiders occupy silk lined burrows that remain open rather than being sealed by a hinged trapdoor. Molecular research indicates that New Zealand Stanwellia originated through dispersal from an Australian lineage rather than representing an ancient Gondwanan separation.
