Schist Gecko (Woodworthia “Central Otago” )
The Schist Gecko (Woodworthia “Central Otago”) is an endemic gecko from Central Otago, where it is closely associated with schist rock outcrops and surrounding scrubby habitat. It is very well camouflaged, with brown, olive-brown, or grey colouring marked by pale bands, blotches, or stripes.
Like many of New Zealand’s geckos, it is mostly active at night and is easy to overlook against schist surfaces. This species is also known as the Central Otago Gecko, reflecting its restricted distribution within inland Otago.
