Zealaranea crassa

Zealaranea crassa is an endemic New Zealand orb-weaving spider found throughout much of the country. It is one of New Zealand’s most variable orb-weavers, with individuals differing greatly in colour, pattern, and overall appearance.

Like other orb-weavers, it builds a circular web to catch flying insects and is often found among shrubs, low vegetation, and forest margins. Despite its variability, it remains a distinctive species and is one of the more widespread endemic orb-weavers in New Zealand. Most commonly observed during January to March.
