Cyclosa trilobata

Cyclosa trilobata is an orb weaving spider native to New Zealand and Australia. In New Zealand it is the only known representative of the genus Cyclosa, and is commonly known as the Three-lobed Spider.

Like other orb-weavers, it builds a circular web to catch flying insects. This species is well camouflaged and often sits in the web in a way that helps it blend in with surrounding debris, making it easy to overlook. It is one of our only “semi social” spiders, where it will often build webs in close quarters with other Cyclosa trilobata.
