New Zealand Ground Wētā
New Zealand Ground Wētā are a group of endemic, flightless insects that spend much of their time in burrows or hiding beneath stones, logs, and leaf litter. They are generally more secretive than tree wētā and are often encountered on the ground at night.
Ground Wētā are mainly nocturnal and feed on a mix of plant material and small invertebrates. Like other New Zealand wētā, they are an important part of our endemic invertebrate fauna and are closely tied to the health of native habitats.
