New Zealand Cave Wētā

Cave wētā are an endemic group of New Zealand wētā, usually recognised by their very long antennae, slender legs, and ability to jump strongly. Despite their name, many species are not restricted to caves and are also found in forest habitats, rock crevices, and other damp sheltered places.

They are mainly active at night and spend the day in dark, humid refuges. In New Zealand, cave wētā form an important part of the wider wētā fauna and are often more easily heard or glimpsed than closely studied, especially in caves, forest overhangs, and damp bush habitats.
