New Zealand Weta’s

Wētā are a group of large, flightless insects found only in New Zealand. They belong to several different groups, including tree wētā, ground wētā, cave wētā, giant wētā, and tusked wētā, and together they form an important part of New Zealand’s endemic invertebrate fauna.

Wētā occupy a wide range of habitats, from forests and shrublands to caves, alpine areas, and coastal environments. Most are nocturnal, and depending on the species they may feed on leaves, fruit, fungi, or small invertebrates. Their size, diversity, and ecological importance make them one of New Zealand’s most distinctive insect groups.
