Grasshoppers
New Zealand grasshoppers are a distinctive part of our Orthoptera fauna and include a number of endemic species found nowhere else in the world. They occur in a range of habitats, from coastal areas and open grasslands to rocky inland environments and alpine zones.
Grasshoppers are usually recognised by their strong hind legs, which are adapted for jumping, and many species rely on camouflage to blend in with surrounding vegetation, rock, or soil. In New Zealand they form an important part of local food webs and are especially notable in open habitats where they can be seen basking or moving through low vegetation.
