Wētā, Katydids & Grasshoppers

Wētā, katydids, and grasshoppers are all part of the order Orthoptera and form an important part of New Zealand’s invertebrate fauna. Together they occupy a wide range of habitats, from forests and wetlands to grasslands, coastal areas, and alpine environments.

These insects vary greatly in size, shape, and lifestyle, from large flightless wētā hiding in tree holes and rock crevices to slender katydids and active grasshoppers living among grasses and shrubs. Many are endemic to New Zealand, and all play important roles in food webs as herbivores, scavengers, and prey for other animals.
