Moths of New Zealand

New Zealand has a rich diversity of moths and caterpillars, with many species found nowhere else in the world. They occur in a wide range of habitats, from native forests and wetlands to gardens, alpine areas, and coastal environments.

Caterpillars are the larval stage of moths and play an important role in ecosystems as herbivores, recyclers, and food for other animals. In New Zealand, host plants vary widely between species, with some feeding on native trees and shrubs while others are associated with grasses, herbs, or leaf litter habitats.
