Bee’s of New Zealand

There are over 40 species of bees in New Zealand, including 28 native species. Unlike the social honeybee, most of our native bees are solitary and nest in the ground. These ngaro huruhuru are vital pollinators for native flora and are often small, dark, and non-aggressive.

In addition to native species, New Zealand has several introduced bees, including the European Honeybee (Apis mellifera) and four species of Bumblebees (Bombus). Bumblebees were introduced in the late 1800s specifically to pollinate red clover and are now a familiar sight in gardens and farms across the country.
