New Zealand’s Skinks & Geckos
New Zealand is home to a remarkable diversity of skinks and geckos, with all native species found nowhere else in the world. They occur in a wide range of habitats, from forests and wetlands to rocky outcrops and alpine areas.
Skinks are usually recognised by their smooth, shiny scales and slender bodies, while geckos often have broader heads, large eyes, and soft, velvety-looking skin. Many species are secretive and well camouflaged, making them easy to overlook in the wild.
