New Zealand Albatrosses

New Zealand is home to a diverse range of albatross species, with over a dozen species breeding here in New Zealand. The most notable species include the Northern Royal Albatross (Diomedea sanfordi), which breeds at Taiaroa Head on the Otago Peninsula. This is the world’s only mainland breeding colony for the Northern Royal Albatross.

Albatrosses are the world’s largest flying seabirds, spending at least 85% of their lives at sea. They return to land to breed and raise their young, often on remote islands. The Northern Royal Albatross has a wingspan of up to 3 meters, making it one of the largest seabirds in the world.
