The Nelson cave spider (Spelungula cavernicola) is endemic to New Zealand and found in parts of the north-west South Island. It is recognised as New Zealand’s largest spider by leg span and is typically found around cave entrances, where it feeds on cave wētā and other invertebrates.
The species has a restricted distribution and is one of only three spider species in New Zealand that are legally protected under the Wildlife Act 1953.
