Orb-weaving spiders are among New Zealand’s most familiar and diverse spiders, found in habitats ranging from native forest and wetlands to gardens and coastal vegetation. They build the classic circular web, which is used to catch flying insects.
Many of New Zealand’s orb-weavers vary greatly in colour, size, and shape, but all play an important role as insect predators. Some are bold and obvious in their webs, while others are so well camouflaged they can be easy to miss.
