Snails of New Zealand

New Zealand is home to over 800 known land snail species and more than 60 native freshwater snail species. Many of these are found nowhere else in the world.

Native snails are most often found in damp habitats such as leaf litter, forest floor debris, and around streams, where they help recycle organic matter, and in some species, hunt other small invertebrates.
