Crickets
New Zealand has a diverse range of crickets, including both endemic and introduced species, found in habitats ranging from forests and shrublands to wetlands, grasslands, and gardens. Like other members of the order Orthoptera, they are important parts of food webs and can act as both herbivores and prey for other animals.
Many crickets are nocturnal and are more often heard than seen, using sound to communicate, attract mates, and defend territories. In New Zealand, they add to the wider diversity of orthopteran insects alongside wētā and grasshoppers.
