Dolomedes aquaticus, commonly known as the New Zealand Water Spider, is a fishing spider associated with open riverbeds, gravel banks, and the edges of waterways. It is well adapted to hunting around water, where it relies on speed and vibration rather than a capture web.

This species is often found on stones and low vegetation beside rivers and streams, and is particularly associated with braided and shingle-bed rivers. Like other fishing spiders, it preys on insects and larger individuals are capable of catching small live fish.
