Cabbage white (Pieris rapae)

The Cabbage White (Pieris rapae) is an introduced butterfly in New Zealand and is now widespread throughout the country. It is one of the most familiar butterflies in gardens and vegetable plots, where it is often seen flying low over open areas in search of host plants.

Its caterpillars feed mainly on plants in the cabbage family, especially brassicas such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, and turnips. Because of this, it is well known as a garden and crop pest in New Zealand.
