Ants of New Zealand
New Zealand has a relatively small ant fauna compared with many other parts of the world, with both endemic and introduced species present. Endemic ants are often associated with native forest habitats, while many introduced species are more commonly found in disturbed areas, gardens, and around human settlement.
Ants play important roles as scavengers, predators, and ecosystem engineers, but some introduced species can also become pests and threaten native biodiversity. In New Zealand, invasive ants such as the Argentine ant are of particular concern because of their impact on native invertebrates and wider ecosystems.
